But what exactly does it do, and why did we choose it over newer alternatives?

How Tolnaftate Works

Tolnaftate belongs to the thiocarbamate class of antifungals. It works by inhibiting squalene epoxidase — an enzyme that fungi need to build their cell membranes. Without functional membranes, the fungal cells can't survive or reproduce.

In simpler terms: Tolnaftate starves the fungus of the building blocks it needs to grow.

Why 1%?

The FDA monograph for OTC antifungal products specifies Tolnaftate at 1% concentration. This is the sweet spot — clinically proven effective without the side effects that come with higher concentrations or systemic (oral) medications.

Unlike prescription antifungals like terbinafine that require liver function monitoring, Tolnaftate is applied topically with zero systemic absorption concerns.

What It Treats

Tolnaftate is effective against dermatophytes — the family of fungi responsible for the vast majority of toenail fungus infections. These include:

• Trichophyton rubrum — the most common cause of onychomycosis
• Trichophyton mentagrophytes — often associated with athlete's foot that spreads to nails
• Epidermophyton floccosum — less common but responsive to Tolnaftate
