Home Remedies for Toenail Fungus: Which Ones Hold Up?
Everybody's Got a Remedy
Google "toenail fungus home remedy" and you'll find hundreds of suggestions. Your uncle swears by Vicks. Your gym buddy uses vinegar. Reddit says bleach. But what does the evidence actually support?
Vicks VapoRub
The claim: Apply daily, fungus clears up
The evidence: One small study (18 participants, Air Force Academy) showed positive results in 83% of cases. Not replicated in larger trials. Contains camphor, menthol, and eucalyptus — all mildly antifungal.
Verdict: Might help mild cases, but it's a chest rub, not a nail treatment. Greasy, messy, and provides zero concealment.
Tea Tree Oil
The claim: Natural antifungal
The evidence: A published clinical trial showed results comparable to clotrimazole. Real antifungal properties, backed by research.
Verdict: Legitimate supporting ingredient — that's why CamoToe includes it alongside Tolnaftate 1%.
Apple Cider Vinegar Soaks
The claim: Acidic environment kills fungus
The evidence: Zero clinical trials. Anecdotal only. The acidity may inhibit some bacterial growth but hasn't been shown effective against dermatophytes in nails.
Verdict: Unlikely to help. Harmless but wastes time.
Bleach Soaks
The claim: Kills everything
The evidence: No clinical evidence. Can cause chemical burns, skin irritation, and nail damage.
Verdict: Dangerous. Don't do this.
Hydrogen Peroxide
The claim: Kills fungus on contact
The evidence: Some in-vitro antifungal activity, but poor nail penetration. No clinical trials for onychomycosis.
Verdict: Insufficient evidence.
The Bottom Line
Tea Tree Oil has real evidence. Everything else is anecdotal at best, dangerous at worst. For proven treatment, use an FDA-recognized antifungal like Tolnaftate — ideally in a formula designed for nails.
Skip the home experiments.
